Finish and protect wood sidings. Use paint, stain, or a clear sealer. Changeable paint needs to be redone every five years. A stain brings out the wood color but you can’t change the color of a previous stain. Clear sealer retains the wood’s natural color but must be reapplied every two years. All serve to protect the wood from rot and decay due to exposure.
Clean stains on wood sidings annually with soap and a soft-bristled brush. Clean mildew with bleach and water. Clean rust with oxalic acid and warm water.
Have space between your house and surrounding foliage to prevent plants from creeping into fissures and moisture creation in the wood.
